SLEEP The tall, lime-green pendulum swinging along the wall of the atrium cafe is just one of the many stylish surprises at Atrium Fashion Hotel (Csokonai utca 14; 36-1-299-0777; www.atriumhotelbudapest.com), on a quiet street just around the corner from Blaha Lujza ter, a bustling square and metro station in Pest, the eastern half of the city. The downsides: Some of the rooms are small, and a few pick up the nearby traffic noise. But the blue and mauve décor is bright and cheery, the location is excellent, and wireless Internet is included at no extra charge. Cost: In high season, double rooms are around 110 euros, but lower rates are often available, with the hotel’s Web site listing doubles in August starting at 69 euros, or about $100 at $1.45 to the euro.

EAT From its woolly mangalitsa hogs to its unusual spirits and liqueurs, Hungary has some of the best culinary resources in Central and Eastern Europe. Sample the gamut at the excellent Bock Bisztro (Erzsebet korut 43-49; 36-1-321-0340; www.bockbisztro.hu), a restaurant operated by Jozsef Bock, a leading vintner. Start off with mangalitsa lard with cracklings and fresh chives as a topping for rustic sourdough bread, order Mr. Bock’s spicy kekfrankos, a hearty red wine, then move on to Old World treats like slow-roasted ox cheeks, suckling pig in breadcrumbs or air-cured mangalitsa ham. Cost: For two, two courses with wine comes to about 16,000 forints, or about $80 at 196 forints to the dollar.

SHOP Hungary’s emerging sense of fashion has given rise to a new generation of local designers, some of whom are working with traditional handicrafts and folk motifs while others concentrate on modern streetwear. To sample a variety of local fashions, leaf through the racks at Retrock Deluxe (Henszlmann Imre utca 1; www.retrock.com), and leave with a cool T-shirt from the Freedoom label, silk-screened with the image of a dead bird. Cost: 6,800 forints.

PARTY Yes, it looks like a ruin. In fact, if you’re in a romkocsma, or ruin pub, you’re actually sitting in a shell of a building that has been taken over, generally on a short-term lease, to function as a pub and countercultural center until it can be cleaned up and renovated. One of the newest is Instant (Nagymezo utca 38), which occupies an apartment building whose peeling paint is matched by unusual sculptures like the giant school of fish hanging in the courtyard. Downstairs, D.J.’s play dance music until the wee hours. Cost for the evening (three Borsodi beers each for two people): 2,700 forints.

SAVE Budapest’s dynamic music scene has a spacious new home in the four-year-old Palace of Arts (Komor Marcell utca 1; mupa.hu). Concerts are on summer vacation until Aug. 20, when a free performance of dance, swing, big-band and modern jazz starts at 5 p.m. and culminates with fireworks at 9 p.m. Then, starting next month, students from the Budapest Academy of Music and other conservatories perform free “Mood Concerts” in the foyer, usually twice a week. Cost: Free.

TOTAL COST 27,500 forints ($140), plus 69 euros ($100), or $240.

On $1,000 a Day

SLEEP Built in the last days of the 19th century as offices for the New York Life Insurance Company, the New York Palace has long been a city landmark, home to the opulent, neo-Baroque New York Cafè and the location of the Hungarian journalists’ union under Communism. After several years of renovation, it reopened in 2006 as the New York Palace Hotel (Erzsebet korut 9-11; 39-049-828-7777; www.boscolohotels.com), blending the building’s original belle époque-style architecture with modern décor courtesy of its Italian owners. Cost: In August, according to the hotel’s Web site, rates for a junior suite start at 280 euros a night, or $406 at $1.45 to the euro.

EAT Elsewhere, in these tough economic times, extravagant tasting menus with paired wines might be considered slightly out of sync, if not out of fashion. Welcome to Budapest, where the over-the-top dining peaks at Costes (Raday utca 4; 36-1-219-0696; www.costes.hu), a sleek new restaurant on a street better known for its pubs and night life. The chef, Miguel Rocha Vieira, worked with Ferran Adrià, and a touch of Mr. Adrià’s deconstructed cooking informs the kohlrabi cream soup with oxtail tortellini and his creamy, blue-cheese ice cream accompanied by a spicy, gingery granita. Considering the quality of the cuisine, the five-course tasting menu with wine pairings feels like a bargain, if not a voyage to an earlier, less frugal era. Cost for two, including wine: 40,000 forints, or roughly $200 at 196 forints to the dollar.
