TGV trains Great VitesseLe TGV-East European
The draft TGV-East European, which is among the 14 priority projects identified by the European Union in the field of transport is to carry out a new line of 406 km between the Ile-de-France and the East France.
It is broken into two phases.
The 1st phase of TGV
The first section of new lines over 300 km between Vaires (Seine et Marne) and Baudrecourt (Moselle), has been operational since June 10, 2007. It is now 2:20 Strasbourg to Paris (against about 4 hours), Colmar and Mulhouse at 2:50 to 3:10 (4:20 against).
The TGV-East Europe is the first high-speed line to be co-financed by local territories it traverses.
Its total cost is estimated at about 4.2 milliars € currents which 3.9 billion € updated under the financing agreement of 20 November 2000, including nearly 350 million € at the expense of Alsace. The participation of the Alsace region in the 1st phase amounts to approximately 175 million €.
The TGV service provides for a gradual climb in charge between June 2007 and December 2008, which consists of:
-- 15 round trips per day between Paris and Strasbourg-East, of which 6 are extended in Mulhouse and Colmar 3 stop. The station deSaverne benefits, has 2 round trips per day,
-- 4 trips per day between Paris-Strasbourg-Stuttgart, of which 1 will be extended to Munich;
-- 4 trips per day between Paris-Strasbourg-Basel, which will be extended by 3 Zürich,
-- 9 additional round trips to Strasbourg link to other poles at high speeds, including Roissy, and regional cities (Lille, Nantes, Rennes, Bordeaux).
Meanwhile, the Region has actively prepared the advent of high-speed Alsace:
-- Accompanying processing stations concerned Strasbourg, Colmar and Mulhouse,
-- Promoting good relationship between the major networks, serving finer territory and cross-border links.
Thus, the Alsace region has adapted and strengthened the entire offer TER Alsace to accompany the arrival of TGV East, which has led to an increase in supply by 17%, la mise en ligne of 80 additional trains. Thus the entire territory of Alsace which is now irrigated by the TGV East and enjoys a significant improvement in its accessibility.
The 2nd phase of TGV
It includes the realization of the high-speed line between Baudrecourt and Vendenheim of 106 km.
This new phase, whose cost is estimated at 1,700 M € (value 2005), is of paramount importance to Strasbourg and the Alsace:
-- By the additional gain of about 30 minutes and the consequent strengthening the attractiveness of relations between Paris, major cities in Germany and beyond, in the continuity of Magistrale for Europe, which will help sit quite as European capital of Strasbourg,
-- A solution that provides the capacity problems of the section Baudrecourt-Strasbourg, insufficient in the current state to support the development of traffic in the medium term, including regional and interregional.
This project will confirm further up the Alsace region crossroads "within Europe.
On 18 December 2003, the Interministerial Committee of Planning has established the goal of launching the work by 2010, with entry into service in 2015.
On 24 January 2007, a milestone was reached through the signing of a financing plan, amounting to 94.16 million €, to start the necessary procedures and studies to the commitment as soon as possible civil engineering works. The participation of the Alsace region this funding is to 6.71 M €.
The challenge ahead now is to bring together the funding of all the work necessary for the commissioning of this line.
Meanwhile, the realization of doubling the railway bridge on the Rhine between Strasbourg and Kehl and interconnection with the ICE (Kehl-Appenweier) by 2010, according to the Franco-German Agreement of 14 March 2006, will become indispensable at maturity completion of the second phase.

Strengthening the partnership Rail Europe
Rhone-Alpes Tourism has concluded a partnership agreement with Rail Europe, the international arm of the SNCF. Until the end of December, Rhone-Alpes and appears on nearly 160 bags of 000 tickets issued in Germany, Benelux, Spain, Italy and Switzerland. A press trip and éductours for travel agents are expected from Italy, the Netherlands and Belgium.
Rhone-Alpes, one of Europe's best served by the train, intends to build on this mode of transport to attract customers to neighbouring European countries. Hence the partnership agreement that was concluded by Rhone-Alpes Tourism with Rail Europe, the international arm of the SNCF.
"This partnership is identical to the one set up with Air France, said Sophie Vaissellet responsible development of Europe Latin markets. So far, working with Rail Europe piecemeal as was done for the Market flavors, in 2006, or for travel news on Northern Europe. But we wanted to go further in showing us this year on the sleeves of tickets issued in Germany, Spain, Italy, Switzerland and Benelux. In total, 156 700 of these kits have been issued for an investment of € 14 000 HT, whose 48 000 Benelux with the French and Dutch, 43 000 in Switzerland with German and French, 27 500 in Spain, 21 500 in Germany and 16 700 in Italy. The goal is to reach the general public by providing adequate visibility to Rhone-Alpes in these markets. It is important to know that many tourists staying in these countries take the train to come to France. "
A trend that should also be strengthened because of higher fuel costs and also because many communities, as the Rhone-Alps region, play the card of sustainable development by relying on rail transport.
This operation will be accompanied by a press trip from Italy and éductours from the Netherlands and Belgium. Representative Rhone-Alpes Tourism in Italy, Paola Pacchiana lead a group of five journalists in Piedmont and Lombardy in our region in late June.
"Milan is connected to Rhone-Alpes by three daily trains that stop in Turin, she says. The Lombard capital is 4 hours and 5 hours Chambéry the airport of Lyon-Saint Exupery. On 7 May, I participated in the workshop "The mornings Rail Europe" organized in Milan where I could meet with journalists and travel agents interested in destinations served by the train. Rhone-Alpes was the main partner of this event. Currently, Italians know especially the mountain with Les 2 Alpes, Megeve, Chamonix and the Alpe d'Huez, Annecy and its monthly flea market, Grenoble, just in Lyon and Saint-Etienne for the design. They come for skiing, gastronomy, local products, festivals and village festivals, religious tourism and just for the Biennale de la Danse. " Côté Benelux, Nathalie Vallier, responsible for markets in Belgium / Netherlands, also relies on this partnership to sell Rhone-Alpes. "From 20 to 22 June, we organize with Rail Europe a éductour in the Lyon region to 30 travel agents Belgian top performers. And from 19 to 21 September, we receive a dozen employees of the Dutch railways in order to train them to the destination. "

In addition to Eurail Passes, there are also many country- or region-specific passes that may be more worthwhile for you if you're only visiting one or two countries or a specific region.
The following rail passes can be purchased in the U.S. from travel agents or directly from Rail Europe. Prices listed are for adults, but most passes are also available at discounted rates for youths (under 26) or seniors (60 and up). The passes listed below are just a sample of the many options and country combinations available.
If a duration is listed as "4 days in 15," "10 days in one month" or a similar interval, that means the pass is good for a certain number of travel days (4, 10, etc.) within the given period (15 days, one month, etc.). Otherwise, the duration noted is for consecutive time periods; in other words, "5 days" means you can travel as much as you want during the five-day period.
These prices are subject to change at any time without notice. For more on rail travel abroad, don't miss our comprehensive European Train Tips.

EURAIL PASS RATE
If you're planning to visit many countries in Europe in one long trip, a Eurail Global Pass is the way to go. Several types of Eurail Global Passes are available for unlimited rail travel in 20 countries: Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Romania, Slovania, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.
The Eurail Global Pass (formerly known as the Eurailpass) is the standard pass, available for unlimited first-class travel for consecutive periods ranging from 15 days to three months. The Eurail Global Pass Flexi offers first-class travel for any 10 days or any 15 days in a two-month period. This is a good option for people who want to spend a few days in each place they visit. Traveling with at least one companion? Try a Saver pass, which grants a 15 percent discount to two or more people traveling together.
Travelers under 26 (on the first day of use) can save 35 percent by purchasing the Eurail Global Pass Youth, which essentially provides the same benefits as the regular Eurail Global Pass, except that you travel in second class rather than first class. Passes for children 4 - 11 cost half of the adult Eurail Global passes and children under 4 travel free.
While Eurail Global Passes are ideal for extensive multi-nation transportation, travelers who are visiting only one or two countries, or whose itinerary is limited to a specific region (such as the British Isles), may be better off purchasing a European Country Rail Pass. Eurail Select Passes are slightly more inclusive than the country-specific passes, allowing travel to three, four or five different countries. Be sure to compare all of your options carefully before you buy, and weigh the price of the passes against the cost of individual point-to-point tickets. (You can find fares at RailEurope.com.)

Rail Pass in Europe Experience
Shop around before you purchase your rail pass. Many agents offer a variety of bonuses; for example, RickSteves.com will give you a free planning map and "travel skills" DVD with your purchase. Rail Europe is constantly running promotions for travel to nearly all destinations. Be sure to check their promotion page often, as new bargains pop up regularly.
Examine your itinerary carefully before you purchase your pass. Flexi Pass holders may save money and travel days by purchasing separate tickets for shorter trips. For example, instead of using one travel day for a trip from Florence to Pisa, buy a second class ticket for $18, and save your travel day for a night train or longer journey.
Make sure your rail pass is validated the first time you use it at a Railway ticket office before boarding a train. Be sure not to write anything on your pass before validation; the ticket agent will do this for you. You may validate your ticket onboard, but be prepared to pay an extra fee.
Be aware that your rail pass will allow you to board any train, but it does not guarantee you a seat, couchette or sleeper berth. In addition, high-speed trains may require a supplement. If you are not sure, check with the ticket agent before you board the train.
Eurail Flexi Pass holders must enter that day's travel date in ink before boarding the train. For a night train departing after 7 p.m., enter the next day's date; you will only have to use one of your travel days. However, if you change trains before midnight, you must use two days.
You may be required to give your passport and rail pass to the conductor when boarding a night train. He or she will take care of dealing with customs officials for you as you pass through each country on your route.
Be aware of your route before you travel. If you are traveling through a country that is not listed on your rail pass, you will have to pay the full fare for that portion of the trip. You may purchase this in advance to avoid a fine; simply tell the ticket agent your destination and he or she will issue you a ticket to cover the journey.
Safeguard your rail pass; it is not replaceable if stolen. However, you may be entitled to a refund if you purchase pass insurance (such as Rail Europe's Rail Protection Plan). Rail pass insurance will not replace your pass while traveling; it only gives you a refund for the unused portion after you return. If you lose your pass, contact the local police immediately. You will be required to submit a copy of the police report with your lost pass claim.
Be sure to read the inside of your ticket jacket for important information regarding reservations, services and bonuses.
Make reservations for sleepers or couchettes in advance. This can be done at the train station and in most travel agencies. Sleepers should be reserved as far in advance as possible, as these tend to fill up quickly. Couchettes can generally be booked the day of travel. You may have to pay an additional fee for a couchette or a sleeper.
If you're planning to travel on a Friday night you may need to make a reservation, as many people will be making weekend trips and the trains fill up quickly. Get to the station early and check with the ticket agent before you board.
Don't leave luggage unguarded on the train or in the station.
On night trains, secure baggage to the rack with a small bicycle lock.
Keep your valuables in a concealed money belt when sleeping on trains.
Most train stations have secure lockers where you can deposit your luggage for the day for a few dollars. Carry change in the currency of the country you are in, as most do not accept bills.
Earplugs can be purchased at any pharmacy and will be invaluable in helping you get a good night's sleep.
